Backpack Drive 2021: Bridge the Gap

Research states that children who begin the school year with the necessary school supplies have greater motivation to stay in school, as well as have a higher self-esteem, all of which sets them up for a more successful school year. Not only do these supplies influence the students and their families, but also assists in a more beneficial classroom environment. When a child enters the school year physically prepared, it naturally allows the student to be engaged and focused. Additionally, having the supplies needed for class creates the ability to have hands on learning and invites more creativity into the classroom. By fostering an environment that welcomes learning and facilitates creativity, students will find they are equipped to be acedemically successful. As the new school year approaches, lower income families are faced with the extensive school supplies list that may be intimating and difficult to plan for.

Last fall, APC had the privilege of giving away 250 backpacks filled with school supplies to the local Ensley School district. Each year we are hoping to double our efforts in providing the resources necessary to support and equip our local community. By partnering with Fritz clinic, America’s First Federal Credit Union, Full Circle, and Cool Breeze, INC we will be able to provide 500 students with the right school supplies to begin this upcoming school year. By visiting our Amazon Wishlist, you will be able to bridge the gap between students feeling unprepared and those who have the tools to engage in the classroom effectively.

APC’s Director of Student Initiatives. Adrienne Coleman comments on the impact of this event saying, “It was a blessing to watch these students get backpacks last year. Having grown up in the Ensley area, as well as having been involved in the Birmingham City Schools for many years, I know we are making a difference in these children and families lives. Providing these backpacks makes a huge impact on these students’ school year.”

By collecting supplies, APC will be able to provide families and students with the necessary tools to be set up for success this school year. It is through simple instruments like scissors and rulers that the community has the ability to create a more positive school experience.
