Prevention

Ninety percent of those who have a substance use disorder started using alcohol or drugs before they turned 18.

To prevent addiction, it is critical to understand that the adolescent brain is more vulnerable to alcohol and drugs than the adult brain. The earlier someone starts using substances, the greater their chances of developing a substance use disorder (SUD). Earlier initiation of use is also linked with a greater severity of illness.

Prevention efforts are the first line of defense against harmful or risky substance use. Using evidence-based programs and techniques, we can effectively enhance protective factors and reduce or remove risk factors.
